Spending your holidays teaching in the U.K. this year? You’ll be thrilled to know that there are endless options for festive activities. Teaching abroad is no reason to skip out on the holiday fun, so here are some ideas to make your winter wonderful!
Visit Winter Wonderland
The classic Winter Wonderland opens in Hyde Park on November 22nd and will be available all the way through the New Year. Enjoy a fair, ice rink, Christmas market, games and excellent seasonal food and drink. This year also includes special screenings of The Snowman. Food and drink tickets will cost you, but entry is free!
Enjoy some Christmas shopping at London’s many Christmas markets. There is a great variety of stores and vendors throughout London, but the Christmas market held by the Southbank right by the River Thames is exceptional. Enjoy handmade goods, delicious treats and amazing mulled wine and cider!
Christmas at Kew or at London Zoo
Celebrate the holidays with some beautiful gardens or some exciting wildlife. The team at Christmas at Kew now has options at both Kew Gardens and the London Zoo. At Kew Gardens, enjoy a beautiful light trail after dark as well as some fantastic food stalls and Victorian funfair rides. If the London Zoo is more your venue, this is the first year there will be a light rail throughout the zoo’s grounds after the animals have fallen asleep. Both events are booked in advance.
For a fun and unique dining experience, enjoy some food and drink in London’s beautiful pop-up winter igloos. They can be found on rooftops and by the Thames, and they are an absolutely picturesque way to spend your holiday.
London Christmas Lights
Another classic Christmas activity and London is enjoying the gorgeous Christmas lights. Get your perfect Instagram shots at this free and magnificent venue to really get in the spirit. Enjoying the lights is entirely free, and it’s a spectacle known around the world!
Ice Skating has always been a popular winter activity in London. There are beautiful and busy rinks at many locations, including the Natural History Museum, Somerset House, the Tower of London and many more. You can even enjoy ice skating with incredible views at the London Eye Festival!\
Hogwarts in the Snow
From November 18th – January 28th, enjoy Christmas at Hogwarts with a visit to The Making of Harry Potter at Warner Bros. Studios. See the Great Hall, and Gryffindor common room decked out with festive Christmas décor and marvel at the famous Hogwarts Castle as it is coated in snow. Book your tickets in advance to make sure you don’t miss out!
Charles Dickens Museum
Enjoy some London Christmas culture at the former home of the one and only Charles Dickens. Learn everything there is to know about the famous English novelist and writer of A Christmas Carol. Admission costs are waived if you have the London Pass!
Advent and Christmas Services at Westminster Abbey
Enjoy the true spirit of Christmas in one of the most beautiful and magnificent locations in the world. You may need to reserve a spot and will not be able to explore the building, but there are many tours that will finish just outside Westminster Abbey that you could enjoy as an addition to your visit.
